XLRI to start operations in Delhi NCR campus with the academic session 2020-2022

0

XLRI (Xavier Labor Relations Institute) is all set to open its North Campus for the academic session 2020-2022. They have set up the North campus in Jhajjar, Haryana. Many people may not be aware, but XLRI Jamshedpur is the first Business School to be established in India in the year 1949. A few years ago, XLRI announced its decision to expand the XLRI banner – under which a new campus will be opened in the northern, western, and southern parts of India. XLRI took this decision towards their vision to provide excellent business education and raise business leaders for one of the fastest-growing economies.

XAT 2020

Also, XLRI has announced that it will launch XAT 2020 on August 22nd, 2019. This year aspirants will have the option to fill out the application for both the Jamshedpur and Delhi-NCR campus. However, the commencement of operations in the Delhi-NCR Campus is subject to AICTE approval.

Courses Offered

The Delhi NCR campus will, for now, only offer the PGDBM program and they will divide the batch into two sections. Information on the batch size is not yet available but is expected to be around 120.

Will benefit students

The addition of a new campus under the XLRI banner is good news for aspirants. This will bring much-needed respite for students as the addition of a new campus increases opportunity and should slightly ease the competition.

The history and reputation of XLRI bring a lot to the table. There is no doubt that the new campus has a lot of potential but whether the new campus can match up to the associated academic standards and behemoth stature of the Jamshedpur campus, India and overseas, will be known in due time.

5 brilliant Unconventional Careers

0

Everyone wants to accomplish something great in life. Marking our stand on the land we walked is a dream worth dreaming. A reputed college degree, secured job, and more, these things fuel the engine of the train of accomplishment. However, the conventional ways of earning gold are, quite frankly, overly hyped? Luckily, this confusing but ragingly forward-moving modern age has opened up so many different paths to success that a conventional career is no longer the only rewarding road to travel.

There are over seven billion humans on this earth and each individual is unique in their own way. Speaking of individuality, hobbies and passion are the one of the most precious feature about humans. Making the best of the existing passion/hobby by wielding it in the right time and age will bring success closer in a faster pace.

There are a variety of unconventional career paths that are quickly becoming more and more popular. Below listed are 5 unconventional careers that are worth pursuing-

  1. Photography:

Photography is an underrated talent. When everything is done and dusted, pictures are all we have left with. In an age of aesthetics, photography is hotly being pursued as a professional career. So, if you’re bubbling with creativity in photography, this is your calling. Continuous practice and perseverance will get you the level where it won’t be just art but also a handsome source of income. Have your photography talent groomed into a rewarding career by splashing over it with a technical background/professional degree. Some of the very popular and demanding fields of photography include fashion, food, weddings, wildlife, etc.

2. Animation:

The aesthetics of modern scenery is vast- among many, one of the most famous is animation. Career in animation is a profoundly rewarding path to follow. The art of image movements through a series of pictures played in successions is now applied to almost every platform. It is no longer limited to cartoons. Animation is now used in so many areas like video games, education sector, films, commercial ads, mobile phones, and many more.

The magic of digital illusions is fast spreading all over the world and the demand for professional animators are very high. The first step in heading towards the direction of animation world is to get a degree in animation/computer graphics. Then, the next would be to apply it practically by practicing religiously to keep improving and to keep getting better.

3. Blogger:

If careers are flames, then blogging is ‘wildfire’. Blogging is very popularly sought, especially by individuals who have a flare for writing. Speaking of writing, should writing be something you genuinely enjoy, blogging is a brilliant choice of profession. In fact, the best part about blogging is that it isn’t narrowed to writing alone. One can blog about food, clothes, travelling- point is, blogging isn’t all about writing like a professional, the clarity of the message and giving the people what they want is trick enough to make it. However, a sincere blogging may require certain skills aside from writing such as professional SEO (Search Engine Optimization) implication, frequent update of the blog, utmost patience, etc.

4. Social Media Manager:

With the revolution of social media, careers are only getting more modern than ever. A career as social media manager is an ambitious and promising future. Some of the main skills of managing social media include launching campaigns, engaging with the audience, growing the follower count, etc. One can pursue a career in this line by taking up digital marketing and advertising degree. The other bonus of practicing profession in this field is the flexibility- freelancing, full-time, part- time, contract based, etc.

5. Fitness Trainer:

These days, fitness and staying fit are riding the shotgun in the vehicle of the world. The need to get healthy and live a lifestyle suited for longevity and peace of mind is increasingly gaining importance. While the techno-style of living is brilliantly advancing, so are diseases and ailments. People are becoming more and more heath conscious than ever, and this open a while new window for the demand for fitness and nutrition trainers. A degree in physical education or nutrition/diet will be the first step in pursuing a career in the world of fitness.

The main crucial key to success is to foundation your career with your interests. True motivation vapors from the hot water of hobbies and passion. To close the article, a career in conventional or unconventional fields should go hand in hand with the area of interest. With a proper formal training in the field of your passion, any job scored can be truly rewarding.

Keeping your Interests on par with your Career

0

It is very easy to feel lost and confused while deciding the best step/direction for a fruitful future. While the fear/worry of how our future would turn out is constant, luckily we have family and friends to help in the decision making. There are of course factors like which line of profession is blooming in the job market, passion-oriented careers, etc. However, sometimes we still don’t get the clarity we seek and the feeling isn’t great.

And, this is why most of us end up finding ourselves in the wrong basket. Taking up the wrong subjects, difficulty in completing the course because it is very hard, etc., such factors leads to an absolute loss of interest resulting in the loss of precious opportunities and years.

Now, the answer seems very obvious- choose the right career that best suits you and your interests. While the solution may sound simplified, there is the need to harness an extended devotion, attention, and lots of effort, in order to land the right career.

The first but also the most major player in choosing in the right path is the parental guidance. Understanding the child’s potential and talents, and where he/she will best excel foundations the base. The price for wrong subject decision is too high to pay- the child’s entire future/career.

Now that we know the first step is identifying the interests/talent/potential, the next step is to consult an expert. Professionals do not see the child’s future through a personal feelings or attachment telescope. They give rational and practical career suggestions after thoroughly assessing the child’s interests, likes, dislikes, etc. They understand the strengths and weakness and try to see beyond the existing in order to find out further talents/skills that the child may possess.

In order to further comprehend the child’s behavior and personality, to get an insight into the little things which are tend to be missed at home, speak to the teacher. Children spend more than half of their day in the classroom where they are surrounded by peers. Teachers know their students and can identify the strengths and weakness. This is very helpful in deciding which career path will benefit the child the most.

Choosing the right career is a delicate matter but also the most important step that decides how the rest of the life will turn out. It shouldn’t be based on what is considered as the safest or the trendiest but rather, it should be something that is falling along the lines of the child’s strengths and interests. Get the opinions of friends and family members, the advice may come off as a traditional but it doesn’t hurt to get the viewpoints of the people who love you the most.

The Rise of Datagirl

Circa 2003

I first met Bandini one unforgiving summer afternoon in Kanpur in 2003, whilst teaching a legal reasoning class to a batch of LST students, a month shy of their entrance exams.

There was a stodgy, grey-green pillar in the middle of the classroom and Bandini would sit leaning against it,reading her precious Camus during the tiny chaotic breaks. While she closed and kept the book away as soon as the class started, through careful gestures she made sure that everyone knew that a weathered Camus pocketbook was in the house. An act of intellectual defiance in the midst of busy, multi-track discussions about last night’s cricket or some school fest or the latest movie in town.

“Sachin Sir, have you read ‘The Stranger’?”

“Yes, Bandini.”

“‘The Fall’ really meant a lot to me.”

“‘Yes, it is disturbing and powerful.’”

On my next visit to dusty Kanpur – the week before the exam – I asked her why she was drawn to law school.

“I want to work on the rights of refugees, particularly Afghan refugees in North India.”

“That sounds like a plan. And what did you put down in yesterday’s survey on where you’d like to be in 30 years?”

“Prime Minister. Ok, maybe, Chief Minister. But not UP, please.”

“I’d vote for you.”

Bandini came from a Bengali family that had settled in the Civil Lines area of Kanpur. Her family had the great national opportunity to witness the steady decline of the neighborhood but also of the city itself.

Bandini got into NUJS Kolkata and a couple of others. She went to Kolkata; a little unwillingly, because of Uncle Bobon. A distant but clingy relative in Keoratala.

Pass(h)er-by

I next met Bandini at the Mumbai Airport in the middle of 2008.

It was 6.45 am and there was an air of madness. Loudspeakers were shouting at passengers. Passengers were shouting at Air Deccan. Air Deccan was, well, shutting down.

There she was. The 17-now-22 year-old girl from Kanpur, now turned out in a smart business suit. She was in a hurry but stopped when she saw me and walked briskly towards me.

“Sachin Sir! How are you?”

“Bandini, so good to see you! Didn’t you just graduate?”

“Yes sir, I’m working now!”Where?”

“Bikrambhai Mehta” (leading law firm, name changed)

“Oh! That’s great.”

We chatted a bit more – about LST Kanpur days, her mother Poornima whom I had met, and the general state of affairs in the corporate legal world. Not too long because she had a flight to catch to make it to a client meeting in Delhi. I was headed to Bangalore on a later flight and went off to a small food stall that promised hot idlis and sold hockey pucks instead.

In a Land Far Far Away

Between 2012 and 2017 I was outside the country and largely disconnected from the lives of my former students. There were chance encounters, occasional law school alumni reunions and a handful of informal advice sessions on Skype, but for all practical purposes I was away from ‘my LST community’ for several years.

Under these circumstances, I did not expect to bump into Bandini at Saigon Market near Union Square in Manhattan in the winter of 2014. I was in a queue to get a Tofu Banh Mi when I heard an inquiring “Sachin, Sir?” from behind me. I wasn’t used to hearing that so much now, and actively discouraged former students to use it, but there it was – in another part of the world very far away. I turned around and saw Bandini. Her hair was cut shorter and there was a mature look about her that had replaced a certain wryness. But it was her. Dressed to fight the bitter American cold.

“Oh my god! How are you Bandini?”

“I’m good, Sir! And you?”

“Are you visiting? Or do you live here?”

“I have been here for a few months working on a long and painful deal with Dresnan Kopes (leading law firm, name changed) on the other side.”

“Ah! So I hear from friends that you’re on the partner track at Bikrambhai?”

“Yeah, I’m doing good. But you know.”

“I know what?”

“Well, you know…”

Maybe I knew. But getting a Banh Mi at Saigon Market takes 5 mins tops and I had to head to a cousins place. I wanted to pause and talk to Bandini, learn more about her law school life at NUJS, about whether the 6 years post law school had been good to her, but I just gave her a hug, asked her to stay in touch, and left.

The Rise of Data Girl

Last month I was invited to give a talk at a data solutions conference. Given that Agami’s Data for Justice Challenge had just launched, the organizers felt that I could shed light on the data-driven revolution waiting to happen in law and justice by pointing to innovations in this space.

I took my place in the big room just as a series of presentations by the top innovators recognized by this datapreneurs network were about to start. After a super technical presentation on geospatial mapping that I didn’t quite fully understand, the next presenter stepped up on stage to speak about the use of judicial datasets and governmental action datasets to show citizens how important laws were being interpreted and implemented in their states.

It was Bandini.

With slide after slide she took the weakest kid in the room past the point of understanding how data could transform their lives in a very real way – in this case by helping them see the effectiveness of their local governments, generating feedback on the quality of the laws themselves, and creating powerful stories that journalists could tell. Her organization is called Counting the Law and she had left Bikrambhai in early 2019 to start it after doing some learning and prototyping while at the law firm itself. As she spoke, I had goose-pimples. It was like 2003 all over again, Camus pocketbook and all.

She walked up to me after her presentation and gave me a hug.

“You know, I wanted to be the Prime Minister. Time to make a start, no?”

“Yes Bandini, about time girl.”

This is a work of fiction but it is not far from the truth. The truth of the aspirations of the students that I know from when they were teenagers. The truth of the experience of many of those that join big law but want to have a greater impact. And the truth of all those who are making the choice to lean into the changemaking revolution and transform this country bit by bit.

Agami’s Data for Justice Challenge is now live. It seeks to catalyze a data-driven future for systems of law and justice, and also find and celebrate the next #datagirl

Sachin Malhan is the Co-Founder of Agami. Between 1999 and 2007 he co-founded and led LST teaching and interacting with tens of thousands of young law aspirants across the country.

And, this is where the people with good general knowledge can play a fruitful role. It’s an intellectual icebreaker that will save you awkward situations while introduced to new people for the first time. General Knowledge is an instant conversation starter and it is also very interesting. It gives you the leverage of having a strong impact socially and it draws people to want to speak to you due to your intellectual vibrancy.

Smarter Decision Making:

Taking a decision is never easy. The moment it is time to take a decision, all kinds of ‘maybe’ starts to trickle down our mind. General Knowledge helps in better and smarted decision making because it literally makes you smart and aware of in every way. Taking a decision, say career choice, becomes half the pressure because you will have proper knowledge and information about the options and possibilities in front of you. This is why GK is very important and goes beyond academic performance and social brilliancy.

Public Skills Enhanced:

We are never really afraid of what we do in the shadows because we know it will be known or witnessed only by us. But when it comes to public places or public gatherings, there is the constant worry of making a fool of ourselves. Public speaking is a talent, and swiftly involving in any topic being discussed by the people around you in an event is also a talent. And the good news is, these talents don’t have to by birth. These are actually of those few talents that you can harness with proper grooming. And the grooming here is consuming general knowledge religiously. You will be able to face any questions, any topic, with absolute confidence when armored with general knowledge.
