The Fascinating World of Digital Marketing

0

India enjoys a huge ‘Demographic Dividend’ with one of the youngest population in an otherwise aging world. According to ‘International Monetary Fund (IMF)’, by 2026, India’s average age would be 29, which would be the least among the global average. The Indian youth also have an advantage of digital literacy and English literacy. The demographic dividend along with fast paced growth of digital economy and digitalization, has lot of opportunities to offer for marketers. Digital Marketing is one of them. The country is all potent to capture the sea of opportunities that Digital Marketing has to offer. Digital Marketing is amazing and fascinating. Let me tell you why.

Digital Marketing is Non-Intrusive (almost!)

In today’s world where ‘personal space’ is regarded very high, digital marketing scores over traditional marketing by being non-intrusive. Customers go to search engines asking for / seeking for / soliciting for information pertaining to products and services that they think will satisfy their needs or solve their problems. And the Search engines (with techniques like SEO and SEM) serve the users, exactly the information that is sought out for – nothing less, nothing more. Only the required information – without noise – is music for the ears of the customers….isn’t it. This is just not possible in traditional marketing where there is so much noise and clutter, bombarding the audience with thousands of unwanted and unrelated adverts, 24/7. This is not what the customer wants. Also, ‘Remarketing’ – is a technique in Digital Marketing, where in you pick and choose your target customers intelligently, based on their previous search and buying behaviour patterns and show only those display ads that make sense to them. Customers would love to see ads, which match to their taste, likings, preferences and their current buying needs. Carefully choosing and picking your target prospective customers and serving them only relevant ads, and at the same time not disturbing the others with unwanted ads – Wow! That’s what I would like to call it a real ‘Surgical Strike’ in Marketing. To make it better, the icing on the cake is that all this is automated with the help of cookies and advanced algorithms. Even if you are one who get overwhelmed by technical stuff, you can chill – ‘Google’ and ‘Google Display Network’ is there to take care of everything, automatically. Customers come to you via search engines, social media and referrals, rather than you go in search of or sought customers. That’s real, cool.

Digital Marketing is Inclusive – is for ‘ALL’

Traditional Marketing in Newspapers, TV and Bill Boards has become very expensive over the years and has become exclusive – only for the big guys, out there, with deep pockets in the form of advertising budgets. In contrast, Digital Marketing is inclusive in nature and caters to the promotional needs of all players – Startups, Micro, Medium, Small and Large enterprises. Even if you are a day-old startup or a small house-hold micro enterprise having a very small advertising budget, you can still engage in Digital Marketing and Social Media Marketing as it costs pretty less. Home-makers, wear a different hat as ‘women entrepreneurs’, by selling homemade stuff ranging from food snacks to organic soaps, on social media platforms and other digital channels. Digital Marketing is empowering everybody – student entrepreneurs, women entrepreneurs, part-time entrepreneurs, startup enterprises and large corporations. It puts all on the same level-playing field and gives a platform for everybody. Its entrepreneurship, made simple with digital.

Digital Marketing is not a ‘Black Box’

In Digital Marketing, advertisers ‘Pay for Performance’ – This is the concept behind Search Engine Marketing, also referred to as ‘Pay per Click’. Only if you see visitors coming to your website by clicking on your Search Ad, through a Search Engine, then only you pay the Search Engine. The more visitors you get, the more you pay – and you get less visitors, you end up paying less. On a day, if you don’t get any visitors, you don’t pay anything. It’s as transparent as it can get. The same principle holds good for ‘Digital Display Advertising’ as well. Here also you pay for performance only. Google Analytics gives comprehensive reports about the performance of your Ads and a detailed analysis on a timely basis. So, you can be assured that you get the maximum bang for the buck you spend. Whereas traditional marketing is a ‘Black Box’, as you cannot really quantify the performance of your advertising budgets, wherein you spend millions of rupees and just hope that it is working. Digital Marketing provides the best ROI for your marketing investments in a very fair and transparent manner.

Digital Marketing provides value to the customers buying process

Digital Marketing assists the users in every step of their buying process –

  • Need / Problem recognition (Gives possible solutions and choices by independent parties and also advertisers)
  • Information Search (Gives a plethora of choices and information)
  • Evaluation of Alternatives (Gives reviews, ratings and feedback of customers and also third parties)
  • Purchase decision (Gives choice of stores both online and offline including financing options)
  • Post-Purchase behaviour (Gives voice to customers in the form of reviews, ratings, comments, likes, testimonials, complaints and feedback).

Customers trust other customers, more than the advertisers. Digital Marketing has amplified the voice of customers from ‘word-of-mouth’ to ‘word-of-mouse’. Electronic word-of-mouth communication (eWom) is capable of reaching a far wider audience in far less time. It has given enormous power in the hands of the customers. Manufacturers and service providers should really concentrate their efforts on getting good testimonials from the customers as bad reviews can rally kill a product mercilessly. This also gives the marketer an opportunity, to ‘listen’ to their customers, which was not possible otherwise. Communication is interactive and two way, only if marketers have an ear to listen to their customers and engage them for a win-win interaction and relationship.

Digital Marketing is all-pervasive

With Digital Marketing, the entire world is your market. The world can access and connect to you from any part of the world, 24/7. The digital world never sleeps. Digital technologies have shrunk the world into a ‘Global Village’. As marketers, you ought to be there, where your customers are. Where are your customers? Today, your ‘Gen Y’ customers are on mobile, on search engines and on social media. Today it is very difficult to find a human being without a smart phone in his hand and who is not hooked to his mobile device at least for few hours in a day. The social media platforms like Facebook, YouTube and Instagram have followers in billions and can process humongous amount of data in the form of text, audio and video in fraction of seconds. Digital marketers can leverage the phenomenal power and followers of Social media to market their products and services. For e.g., you can start selling Indian handicrafts to a customer in US, sitting right her in Bengaluru. With world-wide audience, the reach is far and wide. That’s what I would like to call as a ‘The world at your fingertips’.

Digital Marketing is all potent

With digital marketing the tools and channels available for promotion is enormous. You can start your digital footprint with a good website (your home on the web), for the best user experience. You can choose from Search Engine Optimization / Search Engine Marketing (Pay-per-Click) for better listings in the Search Engines. You can campaign with ‘Social Media Marketing’, to leverage the immense power of the social media platforms. ‘Mobile Marketing’ helps tap the potential of the ubiquitous mobile phone. The touch-screen feature, GPS, Mobile Apps, SMS / MMS features of mobile phones help in global as well as local marketing in the Neighborhood. ‘E-mail marketing’ can tap the huge free email subscriber base. ‘Digital Display Ads’ on websites help touch upon those users who would be interested in your products / services. Marketers can also try out content marketing / affiliate marketing to engage customers and also potential business partners.

Digital Marketing rewards Merit (Meritocracy)

Google is the undisputed market leader of the search industry. And Google has a very robust algorithm and, approximately, uses over 200 ranking factors that go into ranking a website, and over 500 updates a year to their ranking and listing algorithms. So we can be sure that Google rewards websites with good rankings and top listings, both in the free and paid sections of the search results, based purely on merit. There is no hanky-panky here. So all you need to do, is to do all the right things required for ‘Search Engine Optimization (SEO)’ or ‘Search Engine Marketing (SEM)’ and relax. Trust Google to take care of the rest. And No, you don’t need to be a technical wizard to do all that. You are not going to do coding or write thousands of lines of complex computer programs. Whether you are a geek or a technical rookie, you can still make use of the free / licensed digital marketing tools available, with beautiful user interface, to master your digital marketing skills.

So, what are you waiting for? Jump on to the digital bandwagon and enjoy the ride. You would love it. And spread the love, digitally.

All you need to know about BA. (Hons) in Legal Studies

What is B.A (Hons) in Legal Studies?

The three-year B.A. (Hons.) Legal Studies program aims to nurture legal imagination among young students and build a strong foundation to study law and social sciences in the future or be absorbed into legal and allied fields.

B.A. (Hons.) Legal Studies program by JGLS is the first ever multi-disciplinary undergraduate degree in legal studies of the country which was launched in 2020-21 academic year.

It allows a high school student to gain knowledge of the law in a three-year program and yet retain the option to migrate towards several post-graduate programs.

The Jindal Global Law School of O.P Jindal Global University has been the torch bearer of innovation in legal education in India.

It has come up with world-class five-year law programs that have gained massive popularity in the last decade. This was achieved through a series of actions targeted to bring excellence in academia and allied activities for the law school.

World class faculty, Global Infrastructure, Diverse environment, and a dedication towards public service has enabled the Jindal Global Law School to be a part of the top Universities of the world in a short duration of time.

Continuing the journey of innovation and excellence, Jindal Global Law School in 2020 launched the B.A (Hons) in Legal Studies program.

The aim of this 3-year course is to bring a change in the way aspirants think about the study of law. This course has gained massive popularity in the United States and the United Kingdom, therefore JGU decided to bring this curriculum to our country so that our children also have an option to expose themselves to the study of law without committing 5 years to it.

What are the advantages of pursuing B.A(Hons) Legal Studies?

The Legal Studies program offers a variety of subjects spread through six semesters including law, politics, economics, etc. The curriculum finds relations between several verticals to the area of law.

Listed below are the advantages of pursuing this course.

  1. 3-year course: Until the introduction of this course, when a student wanted to study law after their 12th std examination, they had to commit to a 5-year course. A five-year commitment for a student who is not sure whether she/he wants to pursue law as a career is not ideal and hence, they can benefit from this course.
  2. This course offers an extensive and detailed study of the law and other disciplines while allowing the student to retain the option of pursuing a three-year LLB program if their career aspirations are aligned with the pursuit of law as a career.
  3. This program also gives them the freedom to switch to any other discipline of their choice in their post-graduate program and land up in a different profession.
  4. Study of law at an undergraduate level allows you to understand the larger context of law, the uses of law as a social engineering tool, protecting the rule of law, promoting access to justice, and introducing the legal architecture to promote business, trade, investment.
  5. Studying a program of law at an undergraduate level helps the student to develop an analytical mind that can help in the formation of a lawyer’s arsenal.

Who is this course for?

This course is designed to suit the needs of a wide range of candidates. With subjects ranging from law, economics, political science, history etc, this bachelor’s in arts course equips the candidate with the knowledge and opportunity to either continue their pursuit of law or change avenues towards other career goals.

  1. High Schoolers unsure of pursuing a career in law

It is tough to make life altering decisions, especially when you’re not even 18. The idea of following a profession without even knowing about the intricacies of practice is scary to many high schoolers.

Sadly, this is the situation for many courses. To pursue a technical degree in Engineering, a 12th std student must invest four years before he can get the real taste of the industry. It is not until after graduation that compatibility with the job is tested and if it does not fare well on the litmus test, working in that stream becomes tougher every day.

Similarly, if a student decides to pursue law as a career right after school, they put 5 years on the line. Most of the time, they get accustomed to the life of a law student and later that of a lawyer but there are times when it gets tough to continue in the field.

They may not be aware of the day-to-day life of a lawyer and how challenging or rewarding it can be for them.

This course gives that freedom to the student; they can choose this three-year undergraduate course and get a deep knowledge and understanding of law and the legal system of our country. They get to learn about trade laws of the world, the history of Justice Delivery mechanisms in the world. This is complimented by practical learning through internships wherein they get to learn about the realities of the profession.

At the end of the course, they are given a choice, whether to continue the path of law as a career or bid adieu to it and move on to another career.

2. Students whose career goals align with law but are not aiming to become a lawyer

Generally, there are 2 types of students, those who are interested in studying law/becoming a lawyer and those who do not want to study law/not interested in law.

There is a third type, the student who is interested in the study of law but not in becoming a lawyer. Their goals can be vibrant as there are quite a lot of opportunities apart from becoming a lawyer which involves the study of law.

A popular example is that of competitive examinations like the UPSC. This examination involves a dedicated preparation of a plethora of subjects. Various topics from law form a vital portion of the syllabus viz. Constitutional Law, provisions of penal code as well as criminal procedure.

They ask questions related to political science, history, economics etc, all of which are a part of this B.A (Hons) in Legal Studies program.

3. Students aiming to start their own venture

The new age of business in India is here and it is here to stay.

Our youth has moved beyond the usual 9-5 jobs and family businesses, they are now a part of a global revolution that is creating world-class entrepreneurs.

One of the most recent examples is the show Shark Tank that has arrived in India after being a huge success in almost 40 countries. Most contestants are youngsters and even the Govt of India is betting on their youth with schemes like Mudra Loans or Startup India.

The knowledge of law, especially corporate laws and trade law, comes in handy while starting your own venture. There is the traditional method where you pay someone to take care of all the compliance where the cost to work ratio might not be suitable for your bootstrapped venture or you can oversee every element of compliance and lead the way wherever there is a legal hiccup or challenge in the way of your venture.

This course gives exposure to several corporate laws like Contract Law, Company Law, International Trade Law etc. A very handy graduation if you are planning to assume the position of a leader in a business.

4. Any other student who finds their calling in law

While the most popular way to pursue law these days in India is the five-year course, the 3+3 gateway remains to be a strong option.

In simple numbers, let us look at three scenarios

Scenario 1: You pursue any graduation like BBA or BCom then pursue LLB, you are exposed to law for 3 years at law school.

Scenario 2: You pursue the five-year course; the total exposure is almost 5 years to law but there are additional subjects like accounts or management or literature that are not going to help you in your legal profession.

Scenario 3: You pursue the 3-year B.A (Hons) in Legal Studies program and then go for the 3-year LLB. The total exposure to law here is 6 years, the maximum in all three scenarios.
Even the subjects that you study other than law in the 3-year graduation are structured in a way that complements your legal study.

Do you fall in any of these categories?

The IFMR GSB Advantage: Message from an IFMR GSB scholarship recipient

0

“Starting from the initial stages of the selection procedure, it was clear that IFMR GSB assesses the candidacy of a potential student from the perspective of their persona and their achievements. While this appears veiled at the application stage, it becomes evident as the process moves ahead.

WAT and PI rounds test and assess unique skill sets. While WAT focuses on assessing ideology and social compatibility apart from linguistic capability, it is the PI or Personal Interview round that turns the tides. PI questions focus more on work induced (or academia infused) domains of expertise and fields of interests but are meant to analyse the candidate’s intellectual capabilities and strategic outlook.

Merit Scholarship was awarded to candidates based on a comprehensive and continuous assessment. Since there is no single cut-off criteria, all applicants are considered to be in play for the initial merit scholarship which is decided by the B-School.

Merit Scholarship is perfectly described as an ‘icing’ on the cake, but not the cake. That way, IFMR GSB has quite the offering. Professors with varied domains of expertise and an extensive knowledge depth, Contemporary courses that focus more on what the current industry demands rather than what the regular academia would prefer us to know as the foundation, business simulations and case-based study approaches, with options to tailor course pathway based on our requirements.

Moving aside from academics; sports, debates, music, dance, dramatics and other clubs and committee options to conduct events, commitment to mental well-being, socialising opportunities, fun events and many more activities are provided to us.

Scholarship was but a final stage decision sweetener. The pros of choosing the institute matches most requirements of the students down to the letter. The institute, which focuses on providing wholesome knowledge to its students, also offers numerous opportunities. Thus, the onus is on us, as students, to tap into the options we require and upscale ourselves.”
