Specific disciplines never lose their sheen, be it professional, undergraduate, or postgraduate courses. Besides engineering and medicine, if there is one program that withstood the onslaught of ever-emerging trends in global education, then it is MBA.

Do you know that the Master of Business Administration is the most popular program in the world and was first introduced by Harvard University Graduate School of Administration in 1908? Today, there are many B Schools across the globe, offering MBA.

CAT as the Gateway to Top Business Schools

0

Getting a management degree programme appears to be the logical next step for many professionals who seek to progress in their career. Regardless of whatever the line of business or industry, one could prosper to great heights in their career from a management degree.

Having completed an MBA or PGDM exemplifies devotion to learning, enhancing, and implementing abilities that would aid organizational value. Furthermore, professionals with a degree in management are much more self-assured in their marketability with plethora of information that they could indeed bring to various endeavors.

In such context, plenty of aspirants desire to acquire a degree from a renowned business school. Most B-schools in India prefer the CAT exam as the primary indicator for short-listing candidates for subsequent admission rounds.

This Common Admission Test (CAT) is administered on a rotational basis by the IIMs (Indian Institutes of Management). Apart from IIMs, most top B-schools in India consider the CAT score for admission.

CAT assesses a student’s ability and determines whether he or she qualifies for managerial learning in top business schools that not only provides the finest management programmes for students, but also provides placements in top companies with marketable remuneration packages.

If you are about to finish your graduation or have worked in the industry for a few years and want to pursue an MBA or PGDM from one of India’s top B-schools, CAT exam would be absolutely essential to plan, prepare and perform with clear goal setting.

The door to a prosperous future and an inspiring career could be unlocked through admission to these top institutions. Students would learn how to handle pressure and competitiveness most significantly from this exam. Getting hired by prominent multinational corporations and fortune companies for a range of executive positions would enhance their career trajectories.

CAT 2022 is set to take place on November 27, 2022. It is a computer-based exam given in 156 cities across the country. Every year, approximately 2.30 lakh potential applicants sign up for the 10,000 seats.

In the year 2021, CAT was conducted in three shifts at 438 test centers spread across 156 cities in India. The test took 120 minutes to complete. Out of the 2.30 lakh registered eligible candidates, approximately 1.92 lakh candidates attended the test. The overall attendance rate was around 83%. Out of the 1.92 lakh candidates who took the exam, 35% were female, 65% were male, and 2 were transgender.

In the year 2020, approximately 2.32 lakh candidates registered for the CAT exam, and approximately 1.97 lakh students attended.

In 2019, approximately 2.44 lakh candidates applied for the CAT exam, with 2.10 lakh attendance. The number of applications for the CAT exam has been at its highest in the last ten years.

The 10 leading states with the honor of ranking first in the CAT examination:

  1. Haryana
  2. Telangana
  3. West Bengal
  4. Uttar Pradesh
  5. Maharashtra
  6. Andhra Pradesh
  7. Kerala
  8. Karnataka
  9. Gujarat
  10. Tamilnadu

The Institute determines that the CAT cutoff is based on a variety of factors including the number of applicants, number of courses applied for, availability of seats, and the difficulty level of the exam. IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Bangalore, and IIM Calcutta, among other elite IIMs, typically have very high cutoffs between 99 and 100 percentile. The CAT cutoff for the smaller and new IIMs is lower and ranges from 87 to 93. This is equally followed by Tier-1 and top platinum ranked B school and management institutions. According to a brief report, engineers make up seven out of nine candidates that secured top score in the CAT 2021 test cycle.

Significant reasons to consider taking the CAT for pursuing management degree:

  • Students who graduate from these prestigious institutes are enticed by companies with lucrative salary packages.
  • The sheer variety of jobs available, as well as the level of responsibility and ownership that a management degree programme provides, make it worthwhile. You could specialize in areas such as marketing, human resources, advertising, finance, strategy, retail, IT systems and consulting.
  • An additional degree is required to advance beyond a certain level in your career. Choosing a management degree programme such as an MBA or a PGDM is one of the best higher education options available in India.
  • If you hold a management degree from one of the top business schools in the nation, your chances of finding seed funding to start a new company as an entrepreneur increases significantly. Additionally, you get to set a clear track record and engage with some of the brightest minds in the nation that allows you to brainstorm ideas and gain more perspectives.
  • Better networking possibilities, build credibility and recognition, and several other elements are all added advantages to an MBA or PGDM.

To get that top percentile section in CAT, one must have proper preparation method. An ideal and structured approach would help you perform efficiently.

An effective CAT preparation plan would comprise of the following factors,

  1. Knowledge and Technique.

Students must be totally familiar with the CAT exam and all of its pertinent information before beginning their preparation. It is important to verify all information carefully at first, including the curriculum, exam format, eligibility requirements, etc.

  1. Planning Methodology.

The most important part of the CAT preparation process is now onto us. Now is the time to strategically plan your preparedness and follow it through. Make a schedule based on your analysis of the weak and strong topics in a mock exam. It is advised to study every topic on the syllabus and build time into the timetable for revision and practice exams. Individuals gain confidence to tackle CAT questions through proper preparation, which aids them greatly during the exam.

  1. Exam-Taking Strategies.

Candidates who use proper exam-taking strategies would be able to answer most questions correctly, thereby increasing their chances of reaching the top percentile segment. It is critical to manage time and avoid penalty points for incorrect answers when taking the CAT. As a result, time management and avoiding negative marking are regarded critical for the exam.

Finally, practicing mock tests is the best way to succeed in preparing for a competitive exam like the CAT. All CAT toppers recommend taking as many mock tests as possible. The advantage is that with each completed mock test, one learns about his or her mistakes and progress, it increases speed, and new shortcuts to answering questions are discovered. Mock tests are the best platform for developing CAT speed and accuracy because they are all about speed and accuracy.

Making connections with other CAT aspirants, asking questions, getting their inputs, and learning more aids in thorough exam preparation. Numerous specialists that assist students in preparing for such career-defining tests may be found in such forums. Maintaining a high level of motivation requires interacting with others who are going through the same struggles and efforts as you.

Sculpting the Road for Excellence in Management Education

0

Achieving excellence in management education and enhancing the benchmarks continuously has become imperative in the current VUCA environment. The volatility and the complexity of the environment have made it highly desirable that the institutions involved in management education adopt transformative and disruptive process innovations so that a focused approach towards enhancing quality education can be facilitated. In the whole process, the institutions are expected to adopt evolutionary and revolutionary integration of content learning. Moreover, in the current scenario, which has challenged institutions to embrace digitalization, it is highly significant to redefine the systems and processes regularly within the institutes. Not only this, we believe that digitalization has to be adopted as an enabler and facilitator for value creation and dissemination of education.

The need of the hour emphasizes interactive learning and discussion, as the engagement level is very high and far more productive and result-oriented; the possibilities seem to be promising as we live in a digital world where colossal innovations are cropping up every single minute. But, the major challenge attached with this online learning is lack of personal connection, which comes only with physical interaction. This makes the role of management institutions immensely critical in creating a hybrid learning environment.

We must understand that there are three critical missions. The first objective is integrating management education and creating new knowledge that generates research. The second objective is disseminating the knowledge, which results in the skill creation amongst the students; thirdly, the innovation creation as a result of knowledge acquisition and dissemination.

All these three objectives of management education are dependent on the best practices in teaching, learning, and assessment processes within the institutions. Besides these, innovation in teaching-learning processes and the role of ICT and research play vital roles in sustaining the quality of management education. Competency development through skill enhancement has to be the core focus area for the management institutes, leading to the students’ employability and corporate readiness.

At IMS Ghaziabad, our core focus is centered around creating the students’ core competencies by providing them the multidimensional avenues of skill enhancement. A highly competitive and corporate relevant curriculum is offered to the students so that we can do justice with the significant responsibility of fostering the achievement and developing our students for competitiveness in the corporate sector. For the skill enhancement, we have incorporated various value-added certification programs, which have been designed keeping in mind the latest developments in the corporate world. Due emphasis has been laid on the inclusion of corporate interactions via expert talk series to let the future leaders understand, analyze, prepare their action plan and implement the same after checking its viability during their corporate journey. The ecosystem is created within the campus by building supportive learning strategies and student centric learning processes, leading to the students’ personalized development.

Our focus is not limited to creating corporate-ready professionals but also on generating value systems amongst our students to become responsible citizens of the country and contribute towards nation-building. IMS Ghaziabad, right from its inception has striven to become the management school which nurtures business leadership and meets the expectation of ever changing industrial and commercial world. We are raising its global prominence by enhancing its position as an international leader in management education and thought generation.

Pedagogy today has become a function of technology and this relationship becomes all the more promising when used to address the educational needs of the constantly changing and fast evolving business school education. Business schools today are responsible for empowering future managers and leaders with not only the knowledge and insights but also with the ability to sense and respond to the unanticipated changes of the turbulent business environment.

The need of the hour is to conceptualize an integrated pedagogical framework that combines “richness” of augmented reality, classroom teaching and academic research with “reach” of social networking to yield a paradigm of agile education.

The institute has been developing a distinctive brand of leadership, equipped to address critical challenges faced by industry and society. With 31 years of legacy in management education, we have developed a unique brand and tradition of carving the students in order to serve the society with quality bunch of future leaders and entrepreneurs. We visualize IMS as an institution which imparts strategic vision, practical wisdom and core business disciplines to foster and nurture leaders capable of making difference in various arena of life.

In today’s age, where the world is riding in at a fast pace, one must be proficient to weigh up in a dynamic approach and execute desired task resourcefully. Today’s turbulent environment requires efficient leadership and the talent to think beyond obvious.

The threefold challenge faced by contemporary education system is:

  1. Students do not enter the workforce of today with all of the technical skillsets and agile mindset they need to succeed.
  2. Teachers cannot “relay knowledge they don’t have themselves.”
  3. The education system needs to be more customized to different learning paths and learning journeys.

To combat these issues, a strong focus is required in order to nurture the vital three tenets – Agile students, Agile teachers and Agile education systems.IMS Ghaziabad endeavors to remain at the crest of change and continue to develop management thought that address vital business, social and human needs.

Legal Profession: The Global Phenomenon

0

” The Law “, as the ‘ legal profession ‘ is popularly referred to as, is one of the most ancient professions in the world, with the ‘ medical profession ‘ closely following on the heels as the only other. It’s hailed as ‘ the vehicle for social justice ‘ and ‘ an instrument of social engineering ‘. While law has been the harbinger of equality, fraternity, and unity & integrity, it has also been a catalyst for ensuring individual’s rights and well-being.

Insofar as India is concerned, the role of law and lawyers, pre and post – independence, is singularity spectacular and awe-inspiring. While they ushered in ‘ independence ‘ for us, they left no stone unturned to ‘ protect and preserve ‘ independence as and when it came under attack. Both the Bar and Bench have rushed to the rescue of the Constitution and democracy whenever they were in perilous situations. Mr. Nani A. Palkhivala, the statesman -lawyer non-pareil, and hon’ble Justice Shri. H.R. Khanna are two representative legal eagles that have upheld and kept the flag of law flying high.

Legal profession had tended to be mostly ‘ national ‘ in most of the ‘ Common Law Nations ‘ till the 90s. The lawyers mostly catered to the needs of the local clientele enmeshed in domestic disputes. Very few of them and their law firms could make their presence felt globally as the channels of interaction were few and far between.

With the advent of liberalization, privatization, and globalization, the legal profession underwent a paradigm shift. Suddenly, it found itself meeting different clients, discussing foreign elements of law, and resolving disputes, amicably, at the international level. In other words, it became a ‘ global phenomenon ‘ overnight, and started charting varied courses for the world legal journey.

Today, corporate law is the buzzword in the legal arena. It’s not surprising that the commercial and tax aspects of the capitalist world have led to a great demand for corporate and business laws, and thus, the birth of the ‘ global phenomenon of legal profession ‘. Of course, multiple opportunities galore in the fields of teaching, civil societies, defense, judiciary, international organizations, etc. Interestingly, the global aspects of law are embedded in all these avenues. No wonder, young and impressionable minds are being drawn towards this world phenomenon like bees are attracted to flowers.

School of Law, Presidency University, Bengaluru, is moulding the students to be ready and prepared for the opportunities this ‘global phenomenon’ is presenting, and enabling them to carve out their niche in the pursuit of excellence and acumen. We invite you to join us in this odyssey to drive home the point, and soar to greater heights.

Welcome aboard!

ELECTIVES AT Amrita School Of Business

In the MBA program, a student must take 12 electives for credit, two in term three of the first year and the remaining ten in the second year. Students are free to choose the same, but only if a student has taken at least 5 electives in a certain field can they claim to go for a specialisation in that particular domain.

Marketing, Finance, Human Resources, Information Systems & Analytics, and Operations are the prominent areas of specialisation.

Internally, Amrita has defined several optional courses as core to the region to avoid unusual scenarios where students claim to be from a given specialisation without studying necessary electives core to the subject. At least three domain-based electives must be chosen by all MBA students.

‘Consumer Behaviour’ in Marketing and ‘Business Analytics’, for example, are electives that are essential to the field of ISA. ‘Business Applications of Digital Technologies’ is an ISA elective, while ‘FinTech’ is a Finance optional that isn’t considered relevant to the field. The usual trend has seen students divide their options as 7 from one area and 5 from another (7 + 5), 6 + 6, or 5 + 5 + 2 in general (from other areas).

Digital Economy- Driven by Digital Platforms

0

Technology has revolutionized the go-to-market policy of modern firms. In the past, it has taken an average of 20 years for Fortune 500 firms to achieve a billion-dollar valuation. Today’s digital start-ups will become Unicorns in about4 years, according to a new survey. New digital platforms are mainly responsible for this change. Some of the popular digital platforms are:

  • Google — Content and Advertising
  • Apple — Entertainment and Software
  • Facebook — Social & Distribution
  • Amazon — Commerce & Fulfillment

Major companies have seen the phenomenal growth of GAFA (Google, Amazon, Facebook, Apple) and other unicorns, native digital giants, who have built their business model without government funding for many years on a technology foundation.

Many new entrants have recognized the promise of such a model on the basis of GAFA’s success and have started to build their own digital platforms. Some of them such as Netflix, Zoom, Twitter, Whats-app. have become new business unicorns and are further driving the growth of digital market places.

Before giving a summary of what a digital platform is, some examples are as follows:

  1. Search Engine Google: business model of advertising.
  2. Social Media: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn-the corporate model of “advertising.”
  3. Knowledge platforms, such as EdX, Coursera the business model of “anywhere anytime education”.
  4. Application stores: Apple/Google Play-Business model “digital good.”
  5. Marketplaces: Amazon, FlipKart, Ebay, Alibaba shopping engines: industry concept “e-commerce.”
  6. Media platforms: Spotify, Netflix, Tiktok, -the business model “subscription.
  7. Affiliate platforms: Commission Junction, Amazon Associates — Business model “earn as you perform.”

There are several other network concepts, some too complex and other too simple and easy. However, the main characteristics of a Digital Platforms are as follows:

  1. It is a market concept that is technology-enabled.
  2. It promotes interactions between different groups that do not inherently know each other, such as end consumers and manufacturers.
  3. A benefit that is equal to the scale of the population addressed. Creation of a unique culture which creates a value proposition for a digital platform.
  4. It is an enabler of trust: It must create trust in terms of intellectual property and data rights with specific general terms and conditions.
  5. It has transparent connectivity: It exchanges data with developers from third parties to build new applications and broaden the ecosystem. This is achieved by APIs which is part of the API economy.
  6. It can scale massively to address millions of consumers without reduction of performance parameters.

Advantages of a Digital Platform

  1. Generate Revenue
  2. Reduce Expenses
  3. Nurture collaboration and innovation with new products and services
  4. Develop acceleration to deliver commodities to the targeted markets.

The market cumulative valuation of these platforms is about $4.3 trillion, according to the Accenture survey. They employ about 1.3 million direct workers and another million indirectly through their affiliate firms or complementing networks.

Conclusion

The Digital Economy is strongly driven by the emergence of Digital Platforms, most of which have emerged in the last decade or so. Many other platforms to drive shared economy such as Airbnb, Uber, Ola, and Oyo are also emerging to occupy pre-eminent space.
