CAT (Common Admission Test) is a national level management entrance exam conducted by the IIMs. The exam tests the students for the consideration of admission to business schools across India. Every year, over 2 lakh candidates write the exam.

The exam is computer-based. It is for three hours where 100 Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ) and Non-MCQ questions are asked. The traditional CAT exam pattern consists of three sections which Quantitative Ability (QA), Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension (VARC) and Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning (DILR). The same pattern is expected for CAT 2019.

CAT 2019 is expected to be held around the last week of November in two slots- morning and evening. The results are expected to be out by January, 2020, which will shortly be followed with the cut-off release and the further selection process such as WAT, GD-PI, etc.

While IIM Calcutta conducted CAT 2018, IIM Kozhikode is expected to conduct it for the year 2019. However, the conducting IIM only takes care of the exam process. The rest of the admission process must be applied separately to different management institute.

CAT scores are used by the IIMs and other business schools to shortlist their candidates. Along with CAT performance, other factors like past academic records and work experience are taken into account.
