Delhi University Entrance Test: Keeping Students on Tenterhooks!

0
Delhi University Entrance Test

  • No entrance test for the academic session 2018-19
  • Three different tests proposed in 2019: For Science, Commerce, and Humanities
  • Tests will be online, and used as a filtration process; Boards to carry weightage

Delhi University, one of the most-sought-after education abodes post class XII and graduation, had put on hold, for a year, its ambitious plan to conduct entrance exams for its various undergraduate courses. After much ado about its admission process, the University has now decided to ring in changes from the 2019-20 academic session only, citing more deliberations required as the reason.

For the last few days, there has been a lot of buzz around a possible entrance test for at least one of the most coveted programs at DU, namely, B.Com. (Hons). The program attracts a lot of attention every year due to its steep cut-offs. Moreover, the possible cornering of the majority of the seats in the course at SRCC by students from a particular school in Tamil Nadu, given the high scores attained by the state’s students in their class XII State Board exams could be the probable cause.

Along the lines adopted by the Central Government to have national exams for Central Universities, DU has been mulling over the proposal for an entrance test sometime now but has not been able to provide any concrete shape to it.

On January 19, 2018, the University’s sub-committee that was looking into a possible online entrance exam for admissions proposed an aptitude test as a filtration system for selecting students from different Boards, but to be implemented from the next academic year only. One can, of course, argue about the possible issues that might arise, but the fact that DU has been conducting online entrances for some of its programmes (like BMS) across different cities shows that a system is already in place that can be used as a tool for other courses.

The more important matter, however, is that, with the entrance exam proposed to be a filtration system, it will only add more pressure on the students, who already have a lot on their plates due to their Board exams. Additionally, if media reports are to be believed, the University is also exploring three different tests: for Science, Commerce, and Humanities. This is totally unwarranted; and will only add to the confusion.

As it stands, there are two likely scenarios:

Scenario 1: Separate Entrance Test for each Stream

This will add further pressure on students to continue with the same stream, rather than seek a change. For instance, a student looking for a shift from Science to Commerce will now have an additional burden of preparing for Commerce subjects, over and above his/her preparations for the Boards.

Scenario 2: One Common Entrance Test based on Aptitude

Easily, the better of the two options that can be used as a complete process, rather than simply a filtration system. In fact, the University has already adopted this system for some of its programs (BMS, BBE, etc.).

With DU receiving more than 2 lakh applications every year; and an admission process that is already quite complicated (there were as many as 11 cut-offs last year), conducting an entrance exam is a welcome move; but only if it is fair to all, and does not put anyone to a disadvantage.

Brace Yourself for Symbiosis Entrance Test (SET) Online

1
Symbiosis Entrance Test

  • Following SNAP in December, now SET too is to be conducted online
  • The change in format calls for a change in test-taking strategy and approach
  • SET Mock by LST scheduled on 25th May will be online

The Symbiosis Entrance Test (SET), which is conducted for admissions into the various UG programs of the Symbiosis International University, is about to witness a major transformation this year. SIU has decided to do away with the conventional paper-pencil approach, and opt for an online format. It is quite likely that the change in format is the reason there was an almost a month’s delay this year in the announcement of SET.

The announcement should not come as a surprise because in December 2017, SNAP, the entrance exam for SIU’s PG programs, was conducted online.

What it means for SET aspirants: Writing a test online, as opposed to using paper and pencil, requires a change in strategy; and, more importantly, a shift in approach. Sitting in front of a computer for 150 minutes is going to be a tiring experience for many, if not for all. However, those who will be writing SLAT (Symbiosis Law Admission Test, the new name for SET-Law) will find it less challenging, as they are used to writing CLAT Mocks online. But the online avatar of SET will definitely be a new experience for aspirants of other programs, like BBA, BCA, Liberal Arts, Economics, etc. They will need to quickly adapt to the change, as they might not have enough time in hand after their Board exams.

What needs to be done: Students targeting SET 2018 must start building their appetite for long sittings in front of the computer. At the same time, SET was never a complex, or difficult, exam; and quite possibly, will stick to being the same even when the format has changed. So, as far as the fundamentals for cracking the exam are concerned, they remain the same. The impact is largely on reading speed, which sees a drop when a screen is involved; more so for those who are not used to reading online. Thus, the focus must be on reading from a computer screen; which, for CL students, is available when using the SIS/myLST platform. More time should be devoted to Test Gym; and practising online more often. Reading e-papers, solving topic and section tests will also come in handy.

What’s in store for CL Students: Nothing changes for you, though! You have already been working online on SIS/myLST, accessing Test Gym, reading our newsletters, etc. If there is any variation, it is simply that all your SET Mocks will now immediately move to an online platform. We are happy to announce our next SET mock scheduled on 25th January, will also be conducted in online mode.

So, keep your practice momentum up and running.

In the season of MBA exams, results and shortlists, Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies (NMIMS) has released its shortlist on the basis of NMAT 2017 result.

The overall cutoff this year for NMIMS Mumbai is 210, increased by 2 points as compared to last year. The sectional cutoffs for the three sections i.e Quantitative Skills, Language Skills and, Logical Reasoning are 65, 60, 60 respectively. The overall cut off for the other two campuses of NMIMS that is Bangalore and Hyderabad is 190.

The second stage of the selection process at NMIMS is slightly different from other B- Schools. It includes a Case Discussion round (CD), instead of the traditional GD round, followed by Personal Interview. The CD round puts forth a problematic business scenario. The candidates need to ideate towards a solution for the same. The aim is to test the logical thinking and the problem-solving skills of the candidates.

It is vital to rigorously prepare for the CD/PI round and follow the right guidance. Preparing for the second stage of the selection process can prove to be tricky if one is not moving forward in the right direction. To know more about how to prepare for CD/PI and SOP, click here.

While one more B-School has released its shortlist, many premier B-Schools are yet to do so. In case you did not make the cut to a particular B–school, don’t feel disappointed just yet.

7 GD tips to leave a lasting impression in MBA Group Discussions

0
GD tips

Group Discussion (GD) is an integral part of the MBA admission process. In a GD, your communication skills, team spirit and leadership skills are tested. To help you stand out in your forthcoming Group Discussion and to increase your chances of getting shortlisted, we have compiled 7 essential GD tips:

GD Tip 1: Be a leaderinitiate the discussion

Make sure that you take the lead in the discussion. Try to understand the topic and then initiate the discussion. Being first to initiate will leave a good impression on your evaluator.

GD Tip 2: Prepare your thoughts well

Starting the discussion is a big plus point but, only if you have some knowledge about the topic. Do not speak just to increase your speaking time. What you say must be sensible and relevant. Speak less but make it significant.

GD Tip 3: Speak clearly and listen carefully

Using simple and understandable words and being clear and polite is appreciable. If you disagree with someone on some point, express your argument politely and calmly. Do not be aggressive. Make sure that people agree with you; for this, you have to pay attention to what they are saying. Allow them a chance to speak. Listen more and speak less to make a logical discussion and to get involved positively in the group.

GD Tip 4: Alertness and presence of mind

Make sure to take down relevant points put forward by others and sit attentively in a discussion. Always be alert and act immediately. Listen carefully to the opinions of others and be ready with your statements and examples supporting or countering their point to participate in the discussion.

GD Tip 5: Bring the discussion on track

Always stick to the topic. Take the initiative to bring the discussion back on track if by any chance the group is distracted from the topic. Make all the members aware that at the end the group needs to come to the same conclusion.

GD Tip 6: Maintain eye contact

Make sure that while speaking, you do not only look at your evaluator but also maintain eye contact with your team members. Keeping eye contact is a sign of confidence and positive attitude. Show interest in the discussion and keep a positive body language. Do not try to dominate other team members.

GD Tip 7: Give a strong conclusion

Just as starting a discussion is an advantage, taking an initiative to close a group discussion adds a bonus point too. If the group has not reached a conclusion then you should grab the opportunity and conclude it. Make sure to have a strong conclusion. Summarize the points already mentioned and elaborate on a point-wise conclusion. Do not start a new point, however good it may seem.

Hope these essential GD tips help you get prepared for your forthcoming Group Discussion. For more GD tips, you may like reading Tips to crack GD-PI at Management Institutes and Beyond CAT 2017: Sharpen your focus on MBA admissions.
