The Indian Institutes of Management are considered as the top B-schools of India. It is a very highly sought after B-schools by every MBA aspirants. Although the selection criteria for the IIMs are published separately, generally there are two main stages of admission process.

  • The first stage involves writing the CAT exam and qualifying it.
  • The second stage involves the shortlisting based on the CAT score, cut-offs, and further other selection processes.

Once the CAT score of the candidate qualifies as per the institute’s cut-off, they are eligible for the second stage. During the second stage, IIM admission criteria will involve the shortlisting followed by PI, WAT, and GD. However, other factors such as academic record, work experience, etc., also contribute to the final points.

CAT Score and Cut-off

The shortlisting of candidates are done based on the minimum CAT percentile as per the requirement of the institute. The official admission cut-offs are released during the selection process itself by the IIMs. Thereafter, the names of the shortlisted candidates are released post the CAT results.

Initially, the IIMs conducted the Group Discussion and Personal Interview round as the next selection process after the shortlisting. However, now, WAT has replaced the GD round in most of the IIMs. The table below contains the factors that responsible in the calculation of the final score for the IIMs:

CAT (Common Admission Test) is a national level management entrance exam conducted by the IIMs. The exam tests the students for the consideration of admission to business schools across India. Every year, over 2 lakh candidates write the exam.

The exam is computer-based. It is for three hours where 100 Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ) and Non-MCQ questions are asked. The traditional CAT exam pattern consists of three sections which Quantitative Ability (QA), Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension (VARC) and Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning (DILR). The same pattern is expected for CAT 2019.

CAT 2019 is expected to be held around the last week of November in two slots- morning and evening. The results are expected to be out by January, 2020, which will shortly be followed with the cut-off release and the further selection process such as WAT, GD-PI, etc.

While IIM Calcutta conducted CAT 2018, IIM Kozhikode is expected to conduct it for the year 2019. However, the conducting IIM only takes care of the exam process. The rest of the admission process must be applied separately to different management institute.

CAT scores are used by the IIMs and other business schools to shortlist their candidates. Along with CAT performance, other factors like past academic records and work experience are taken into account.

7 mistakes CAT takers should avoid

By CL -
April 29, 2019

Perseverance is the key to achieving dreams. There are many things in life that we wish to obtain. Sometimes we win, sometimes we lose, and sometimes we fail because of our mistakes.

It is very crucial to have discipline, hard-work, and dedication for an MBA aspirant.  However, blindly preparing with sleepless nights is not wise. The important thing to remember is that studying/preparing the right way or rather the smart way is most likely to break barriers.

CAT (Common Admission Test) is designed in such a way that hard-work alone cannot guarantee success. Given its vast syllabus and extensive topics, it sometimes seems almost impossible to be fully prepared. And this is why hard-work with smart and selective studying is the best approach for the CAT takers.

7 mistakes 2019 CAT takers should avoid:

  1. Lack of Conceptual Clarity

Hard-work is a gift of its own, that’s the beautiful thing about working hard. But things fall down-hill due to doubts. In order to master something, one must first be crystal about it. And, this is very true for CAT exam as well.

Without conceptual clarity, you might as well not start the preparation at all. The reason why this is very important is because doubt clearance leads to a full grasp of the topics. This in turn saves time, leading to a wealthier harvest of preparation.

  1. Skipping Revisions

CAT preparation is destined to fail without revisions. Constant revision is the source of life in the CAT world. Revise regularly the concepts, formulas, etc. Do not leave out any covered topics and continue to keep practicing and revising.

  1. Shipwrecked on one section

Getting stuck in questions or sections that you can not understand is a grave mistake. There will always be certain parts that will seem confusing or hard to grasp. Because each section in the exam has time duration of 60 minutes, avoid being stagnant on a topic that seems unfamiliar. If not, time will run out, and it may result in incomplete submission.

  1. Last minute preparation of new topics

The rush to want to cover new topics, especially due to the last-minute nerves happens involuntary. But because last minute preparation mostly leads to contradictory confusion, CAT takers must absolutely avoid it. As mentioned above, the golden key is, ‘revision’, not learning new concepts in the very last minute

  1. Lack of consistent study routine

Anything is done better with a rhythmic flow. While preparing for CAT exam, one of the most common mistakes is not maintaining a time table. A consistent study routine will not only set discipline but help keep learning in check.

Keep track of your progress by religiously following a time table which is practical. Impractical goals eventually backfire, hence, maintain one that allows you to motivate yourself and to keep pushing.

  1. Avoiding mock analysis

Analyzing mock performance is a very critical habit to practice. Through this, you will get an analysis of how the actual test will turn out. Thoroughly analyze the online/offline mock performance you take to get an insight to which areas you are most likely to excel, and the areas you need to work harder. This strategy helps in keeping track of the accuracy level and helps in avoiding unnecessary blunders on the exam day.

  1. Self-doubt and Cynicism

Although this seems a little more personal and less academic, the power of believing in oneself can command oceans and move mountains. CAT preparation is a long race. It needs perseverance and patience. Given the vast syllabus and the need for constant practice, it can be exhausting. The sentiments for giving up or feeling defeated will definitely come knocking. But this is one major slip you should fight. Keep fighting against it throughout the preparation stage and always believe in yourself.

Wishing you the best of love and luck for CAT 2019!

According to the CAT registration analysis, after the year 2008, 2018 witnessed the highest number of registration amounting up to 2.41 lakhs. This marked an escalation of 10000 candidates as compared to 2017 registration record of 2.31 lakhs.

While 2017 registration record was inclusive of both paid and unpaid candidates, 2018 analysis accounts only the number of the fully paid and submitted forms.

The number of candidates who skipped test is also lowest for the year 2018. Around 30,933 candidates did not write CAT 2018 which is around 12.8 %. On an actual number comparison, this may not seem like a big difference (CAT 2017 witnessed a 13% of non-participants) however, it definitely marks a positive trend.

Every tourist attraction is so incredibly breathtaking that you just cannot afford to drop a single place in your itinerary.

Here is a compilation of the top 10 places you should definitely visit on your stay in Taiwan.

NATIONAL PALACE MUSEUM

Museum in Taipei.

Home to one of the largest collections of nearly 700,000 pieces of ancient Chinese imperial artifacts and art works, the National Palace Museum presents a glaring insight into China’s imperial past. About 8,000 years of Chinese Art history from the Neolithic age to the Modern era is part of this mind-blowing collection. Most items on display are high quality art works and artifacts collected by Chinese Emperors. So if you are a lover of history and all things art, the National Palace Museum is the one place that you just shouldn’t miss.

Taroko, means “magnificent and splendid” in the language of Truku, the aboriginal tribe that resides in the area. Owing to its name, the Taroko Gorge serves as an abode to the most splendid natural wonders in Taiwan. It is a 19 km-long canyon situated near Taiwan’s east coast. It is also identified as the Taroko Gorge National Park. A phenomenal aspect of this national park is the mind-blowing topography of this place. On your visit to this national park, visit the trail to the Eternal Spring Shrine. It features a stunning waterfall and is bound to make your day.

TAIPEI 101

Skyscraper in Taipei.

Formerly known as the Taipei World Financial Center, the TAIPEI 101 is a major tourist attraction in Xinyi District, Taipei. Once classified as the World’s tallest building in 2004, the skyscraper was dethroned in 2010 by the Burj Khalifa in Dubai. It may no longer be the tallest building in the world, but it continues to be one of Taiwan’s most impressive buildings. The 728-ton mass damper that allows the building to survive the island’s many earthquakes is an exquisite piece of engineering.

If you are in Taipei, TAIPEI 101 is the one place that you just cannot miss.

From its picturesque sunrise and sunsets to its peaceful hiking trails and scared trees, to its production of internationally famous Taiwanese tea, this place has a lot to offer. Of interest to us is the Japanese-built train on the Alishan Forest Railway which is a major tourist attraction. The railway was constructed in 1912 by the Japanese Colonial Government and can be fittingly described as a colonial gem. It goes all the way to the top of the mountain where there are plenty of easy hiking trails: an excellent breeding ground for nature photography. Visit this place to cherish nature and to capture it in its pristine beauty.

RAINBOW VILLAGE

The Rainbow Village is a village in Nantun District, Taichung which is dressed entirely in street art. This colorful neighborhood was the brainchild of a local man called Huang Yung-Fu: a former soldier who began painting houses in his settlement to save them from demolition. Over the years, his colorful artwork which includes birds, animals and people, has spread over the remaining houses in the village. If you are an art lover who wants to see and breathe art in every possible corner you turn to, the Rainbow village is just the place in Taiwan that you just shouldn’t miss.
