From this academic year, four new Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) will be open admissions for engineering students. Candidates will be shortlisted through the JEE Advanced examination and will compete for a total of 23 IITs.The list of IITs will now list campuses in Chattisgarh, Jammu, Goa and Karnataka.
IITs, declared as Institutes of National Importance, will now witness an increase in the total number of seats (presently, about 10,000) by about 1080. Each new IIT will initially admit 180 students in the first year with the number increasing to 450 in the second and to about 930 in the third year of operation.
For an initial period, the newly formed IITs will be mentored by a pre-established IIT to enable proper functioning of operations. As notified by the Ministry of Human Resource and Development, the new IITs will initially function from rented campuses, to host buildings of their own as the years progress.
The year 2014 saw 16 IITs providing B.Tech courses at Under Graduate level, offering 9784 seats. With the number of seats ever rising and new IITs at Palakkad (Kerala) and Tirupati (Andhra Pradesh) having successfully hosted classes for nearly a year now, candidates aspiring for IITs will have much more to look forward to.
Engineering aspirants should note that the admission for IIT is conducted in two stages. Ever year, over a million candidates appear for the JEE Main but only about 2,00,000 candidates make it to the JEE Advanced, of which, only a select few make their way into an IIT.
With the competition for IIT getting hotter every year, these new institutions will definitely offer candidates preparing for Engineering examinations a better chance of landing the education of their dreams.
