Do you get alarmed when you see Data Interpretation questions that apparently seem complicated?

Interpreting data quickly is a skill that comes with practice. There is a method to the madness. Read, Demystifying DI. Since DI is a sure-shot question in any competitive examination, be it CAT, XAT, GRE, CLAT, SSC or IBPS PO papers, it pays to perfect your techniques. Data interpretation is a very important section is usually combined with reasoning. It doesn’t require a lot of efforts to build a hold on concepts required to solve Data Interpretation questions with accuracy and precision. So, this time we have come up with an article on how to approach high level questions of Data Interpretation through illustrating different types of Data interpretation questions that are likely to come in the examination.

Data interpretation question that have a higher level of difficulty than the ones that are generally seen in SSC and IBPS PO papers are CAT, XAT, GRE, CLAT, these may have more difficult cases. Read, DI- simplifying hat the numbers convey. These give information in the form of paragraphs. The questions require working on the data such that only calculations are not enough but analysis of the data is required. There are important techniques that you can follow in different types of Data Interpretation questions that will help you figure out the right answers.

Kind of Data Interpretation questions and examples

  • Tournaments

This gives information about the teams that play in a tournament. In case of a tournament such as the World Cup, 8 teams reach the quarter finals and 4 teams reach the semi-finals. Only two teams reach the finals. A win gives a team a certain number of points; a draw would give half the number of points.

Example:  The difference in points between the team that wins and the one that is ranked 8th in terms of points after the quarter finals.

  • Venn Diagrams

In case of Venn diagrams, the questions that are asked could be about the total number and the groups that the total is divided into. Venn diagrams for sets A, B and C could be used to find the intersection of sets A, B and C; it can also be used to find the intersection of any of the two sets.

Example:  Three sets with information on Aeronautics, Chemical Engineering, Biotechnology, etc. give information on people who have chosen these subjects in engineering. Information on intersection of three sets or a two of the sets may have been given. Questions are asked on number of students opting for only one of the subjects out of the three.

  • Information on a group of people

Information on a group of people may be given for certain attributes. The questions that are asked on this data can be solved by preparing a table of information. This is often used to match information such that the value for each of the attributes can be found for the group of people.

Example:   If information on occupation and the cities in which 4 students A, B, C and D live in is given. Then, information table can give the name of cities and occupation for each of the students.

  • Cipher

It gives information on codes such that every word or sentence can be written in the form of a certain code such that every alphabet is denoted by another one. This also holds true for a certain kind of problems.

Example:     “Mathematics exam” is encrypted in a certain language such that every alphabet is represented by one that finds a place two places later in the English alphabet.

  • Organizational profits & income

Data on organizational profits and income can be given for an organization. Data on 4-5 variables find a mention in this.

Example:  The information in these sets can be used to find profit margin for products, income, etc. These sets are time consuming.

  • Train & Flight Schedule

Schedule for trains and flights gives information on arrival and departure timings;

Example:  Airlines are able to get slots for flights from DGCA (Directorate General of Civil Aviation), Government of India. The schedule for flights for different airlines can be prepared by looking at the slots and the kind of time slots asked for by airlines. Questions can be asked on this.

Lastly, befriend pen and paper while practicing DI questions.  Do not use calculators for calculations. Jot down the important points, the minimum and maximum values, reference value mentioned in the question based on which the graph is drawn. By the time you are well acquainted to interpret the data correctly, you will see a rise in your scores.
