- DU is, supposedly, considering an aptitude test for non-CBSE students.
- No clarity on whether ICSE students too will need to take the test.
The noise and confusion around Delhi University’s admissions for the academic session 2018-19 continue to get louder and bigger. As per latest media reports, DU is now planning to conduct an aptitude test for students belonging to non-CBSE boards. The difference in stance adopted by the University’s officials entrusted with the possibility of conducting an entrance exam for admissions in the last few days is becoming difficult to understand. While at one point, the University had cited lack of infrastructure and manpower as a reason not to conduct an entrance test this year, it now seems to be planning to conduct the same for students from boards other than the CBSE!
Moreover, if the media reports are to be believed, a big question mark now hangs over students belonging to ICSE, which, like the CBSE, is a national-level Board, with schools affiliated in almost all states of the country. Will they be spared from this test, like their compatriots from the CBSE, or, will they too be writing the same to secure a place in DU, is the million-dollar question.
On an average, more than 1.07 crore students write the Class XII Board exams every year, out of which CBSE contributes just around 12 lakh. Let’s not also forget the fact that, in 2017, DU received almost 2.5 lakh applications for admission to its various undergraduate programs, of which the majority was from the state of Uttar Pradesh (66,000+).
Everything considered, it is now about time the University comes out with a detailed outline about any changes it seeks to bring in to its admission process in 2018. Changing stances, as has been outlined in two recent media reports (NDTV and Financial Express) will not only add to the already existing confusion, but will also add undue pressure on students, when they are about to embark on one of the major phases of their life—the Board exams—in another 15–20 days’ time.
